Lesson Objectives 1) Review the steps involved in problem solving 2) Review the stages of the System Life Cycle 3) Describe what prototyping is and the advantages of prototyping.

The System Development Life Cycle System Development Life Cycle is a process used to design, develop and test high quality software. It is made up of phases or stages.

The System Development Life Cycle What are the phases (stages) of the system development life cycle? Phase 3. Design  What will the new programme do?  What will it do?  What will it look like. Phase 4. Implementation  Create the new programme  Install and test it  Train users how to use it  Convert to new system Phase 5. Maintenance  Does the new programme solve the problem.  Can it be improved  Monitor that it works Phase 1. Planning  What is the problem you want to solve.  Ask users what they think the problem is. Phase 2. Analysis  Look at different ways to solve the problem Change the way things are done now?. Create a new way of doing things

Phase 3: Design Important questions to ask:  What will the new programme do?  What are the main features of the new programme?  What will it look like?  How will users interact with the programme

Prototypes Prototypes are used in the design phase A prototype is an early sample, model, or release of a product built to test a concept or process. It contains the main features of the product or the software.

Examples of prototypes

Advantages to the designer 1) Allows designer to build and test key features of the new product or software 2) The software designer can get valuable feedback from the client early in the project. 3) This feedback can improve the final software product.

Advantages to the client 1) Allows client to monitor progress of the product or software. 2) Allows client to suggest improvements or ways of making the software better. 3) Clients have a better understanding of how the product or software works.

Basis forms of Prototype (for webpage design) Wireframe Storyboards Site maps

Basic wireframe

Storyboards A storyboard is a series of drawings or images that represents how an interface would be used to accomplish a particular task. Typically used to understand the flow of the user’s work and how the interface will support each step.

Site map A site map can be used to demonstrate how navigation of your web site will be achieved.

Sitemap task You are working for a web design company Your boss has asked you to create a site map for a small shoe shop selling men’s, women’s and children shoes and should include 3 pages of your choice You have 15 minutes to come up with the site map.
