Keyboard Commands to know: Ctrl + D : Deselect Ctrl + C : Copy Ctrl + X : Cut Ctrl + V : Paste Ctrl + Z : Undo
Labeling Workspace Toolbar: Where the tools live! (Some tools are “hidden”) Options Bar: displays current settings for the tool you have selected, change settings here Title Bar: displays the name of your file, current magnification level Palettes: on the far right, includes color, layers, etc. Palette Icons: Attached to Palettes (quick access to history, brushes, etc.)
“Hidden Tools” There are tools “hidden” under other tools Hidden Tools are indicated by the little black triangle in the corner of the tool Click and hold down with mouse on a tool to see the Hidden Tools underneath
Selecting Images Photoshop “sees” in pixels Selection Tools: (and how they select) Marquee (selects by shape) Magic Wand (selects by color) Lasso (selects by freeform) When something is selected it is surrounded by “marching ants.”
Crop Tool The crop tool can be used to add to or take away from areas of your canvas You can crop to only include certain areas of a photo You can add to your canvas using crop tool to add a “border”
Photoshop Settings Flashing Screen?! ◦ Edit > Preferences > Performance ◦ “Advanced Settings” button ◦ Change drawing mode from Advanced to Basic ◦ Say “Ok” ◦ Restart Photoshop

Saving Photoshop’s unique file format:.PSD Save as.PSD if you want to continue to edit and work on the piece Photoshop will save as.PSD by default.PSD files are LARGE FILES
Using images from the web Normally you would not be allowed to just “borrow” from the web Graphic designers use stock photo sites (buying individual pics or subscribing) or they create their own images Our rules: ◦ We’re not making a profit ◦ We’re not claiming the images as our own
Magnetic Lasso…the other selection tool Magnetic Lasso…the other selection tool Stay close to the object you want to lasso as you trace around it with the mouse Delete key: If you don’t agree with magnetic lasso’s selection press “delete,” it will take you back a step without losing all that work! Click with the mouse: Click to add a point that it just isn’t getting Click/Double Click: To complete the selection hold tool over first point and it will show a lasso with a circle, click to end (OR double click at any time to end)
Quick Magnetic Lasso… The Magnetic Lasso Tool works best with photos that have an image with HIGH CONTRAST to its background
Finish Labeling Tools Zoom Tool: Alt + zoom tool gives you the zoom out Eraser & Brush Tools: you can change the brush size, type, and opacity Eyedropper Tool: select a color from the canvas Paint bucket: Fill color
Brainstorming Personal Logos Think of imagery that represents things you like to do, places you hang out, people you love…all about you! my brainstorming/imagery/ideas might include… Fill out the sheet Flip to the back… Sketch 2-3 ideas for a “logo” that represents you in those squares Sketches should be significantly different and show variety!
Personal Logos In Photoshop, create a New Document 4 inches by 4 inches, 72 resolution Look up imagery on Google to create, use selection tools We will work on these next class too Use this for additional PRACTICE for your new Photoshop skills!!
