Bell Work: 9/17/14  Read the article “Insulation”.  How does insulation work? Be specific and descriptive.  Compare the different materials listed in the article to the materials we have tested in class. Which ones are similar?

Essential Questions to Ponder… Can we recognize different types of energy transformations?

Standards SPI Recognize that energy can be transformed from one type to another.

Energy Transformation  What is the energy transformation for a car?

Could You Live There? What do you think it would be like to live in a shipping container home?

Could You Live There? GLUE IN YOUR BLUEPRINTS!!!

Yesterday’s Tweet…  What would happen if you tried to add a foot of insulation all the way around the shipping container? Where would you suggest it would go?

$$$ Check  Word Search= $250  Crossword Puzzle= $250  Temperature Change Data Chart= $250  Types of Insulators Data Chart= $250  Total Insulation Bucks= $1,000!

Imagine Fill out and glue in the “Engineering Challenge Details” half sheet. On the next page, imagine and sketch your design. Will you use one or two model shipping containers? What insulation material(s) will you use?

Questions to ponder…  How do you think our insulation cost might be affected by using a very large model home?  Do you think there are ways to get more for our money with insulation? What might you suggest?

Plan: Your goal is to engineer a model home that stays at a comfortable and preferably constant temperature inside no matter how high or low the temperature gets outside.  Work with your group to plan your insulated model home design and create a final sketch of your team’s home.  Label your sketch.  Make a materials list & don’t forget to justify your materials.  Also keep track of how much you will spend on each material.  As you plan, make a list of steps you till take to build your model.

Create  Create your team’s design.  Test your model home.  Draw the charts below for recording data. WE WILL RECORD THE CLASS DATA ON THE “RESULTS BOARD”.

Reflect Create  How well did your design insulate your home? Improve  Are there parts of your insulated home design you would like to improve?

 Use a Post-It Note to “tweet” about the following question: Is your insulated model home a technology? Why or why not? Tweet a response…
