Viruses and Bacteria. Viruses are made of two parts – A protein coat called a capsid – Genetic material, can be DNA or RNA Viruses that infect bacteria.
Virus A tiny, nonliving particle that invades and then reproduces inside a living cell.

Objective: What are the functions of the different organelles within cells?
Viruses, bacteria, viroids, and prions can all cause infection.
Prevented with inoculation of weakened virus Can only reproduce inside a living cell Is dormant outside a living cell Averages 20 to 25 nanometers long.

Types of Pathogens Describe the characteristics of different types of pathogens. Classify pathogens by their characteristics.

Endosymbiotic Theory Endosymbiotic Theory proposes that eukaryotic cells arose from living communities formed by prokaryotic organisms. Endo- means inside.

Objective: What are the similarities and differences between bacteria and viruses?

 Take the page and divide it into 6 equal boxes  Number the boxes Notes: Bacteria and Viruses

 Pathogen disease causing agent  Can either be a virus or bacteria!!!  In the box create a picture to help you remember that pathogens get you sick!!!

 Prokaryote  Has genetic material (DNA) floats in cytoplasm  Has cell wall  Has cell membrane  Has ribosomes  May have flagella to move

 “non-living”  has genetic material (DNA or RNA)  no nucleus  surrounded by a protein coat called a capsid  no organelles

Bacteria - Binary Fission: make a clone - Conjugation: tube from one bacteria inserts genes into another - Spores: tiny dormant seeds Viruses: - Have to take over another cell

 Antibiotic drugs: destroy the cell membrane of bacteria  Antiviral drugs: can stop transcription of viral proteins

 In 3 complete sentences (# and highlight your periods) Explain to someone how they can tell the difference between a bacteria and a virus?
