A story of Lithuanian flag

LITHUANINAN REPUBLIC STATE FLAG IS THE NATIONAL FLAG CONSISTING OF A PIECE OF CLOTH,CONSISTING OF THREE EQUAL HORIZANTAL STRIPES: The top – yellow, medium – green, lower – red.

Lithuania discusions regarding a national flag began in 1905 lithuanian congress in vilnius. John basanavicius thought to be the most suitable for the lithuanian grand duchy flag – red with a white knight.

In 1917 it was decided to flag color ethnic weavings. Anthony zmuidzinavicius invented red – green flag, but many did not like the two colored, it was too dark and gloomy.

After much controversy in 1918 april 19 the commission finally decided that the lithuanian national flag shall consist of three horizontal bands of equal width of yellow – green – red.

The soviet occupation of lithuania in 1940 july 30 ordered instead of the tricolor with a red flag. In 1953 red was changed to red - white- green flag. Already in 1988 summer social events began to tremble old tricolor. Soon, on 18 november lituanian ssr supreme council, meeting in the tenth sesion of the eleventh convention, was forced to change the constitution, and yellow – green – red flag to give the flag status.

Yellow means sun, light and prosperity, the green symbolizes the beauty of nature, freedom and hope, and red – the land of the courage of spilled blood.
