National Institute of Building Sciences Public Law , Sect. 809 –Bridge between Private and Public Construction –Non-governmental – Unique 501c3 Organization –Unique in that it represents all disciplines in industry Architects, Engineers, Contractors, Insurers, Unions, Manufacturers, Legal, Housing, Vendors, Owners, Consumers, State & Federal Government, Codes & Standards, and Testing –buildingSMART alliance is a council of the Institute –Formerly International Alliance for interoperability NIBS Related Products – –Construction Criteria Base –Whole Building Design Guide –National CAD Standard –National BIM Standard An Authoritative Source of Innovative Solutions for the Built Environment

The Alliance Vision A global environment where all participants can readily and transparently share, apply and maintain information about facilities and infrastructure to enhance quality and economy of design, construction, operation and maintenance Mission Improve all aspects of the facility and infrastructure lifecycle by promoting collaboration, technology, integrated practices, and open standards

Relationships NIBS Board of Directors NIBS NIBS President buildingSMART alliance™ Staff Board of Direction buildingSMART International Alliance Programs Projects From all members of the Alliance External and Internal Projects Sponsors and Members External and Internal Projects

Proposed Strategy 1.Create a strong industry presence and recognition for alliance goals for interoperability and collaboration 2.Create a multilevel business enterprise architecture for the industry involving all stakeholders by identifying all activities in the scope of the alliance 3.Seek projects that populate the business architecture and ensure that information is identified and that it flows throughout the lifecycle to all stakeholders 4.Develop and advance open standards for interoperability and collaboration between practitioners based on the business enterprise architecture This is the primary goal of our efforts

BIM – GIS Information Exchange Project BIM and GIS both play key roles in a facility lifecycle Both systems need to exchange data yet both serve as the repository for key data elements This Project will provide the basis for an information relationship between the two environments and their underlying databases

Lifecycle Information View Simulations -Comfort -Ventilation, heating -Life cycle cost -Light, sound -Insulation -Fire, usage -Environment -Life time predictions Specifications -Specification sheets -Classification standards -Estimates, accounting Briefing -Functional req. -Estimates -Conditions -Requirements Knowledge databases -Best practise knowledge -Own practice Laws and regulations -Building regulations -Building specifications CAD software -Drawings, calculations -Architect, engineer,… VRML -Visualisation, 3D models Procurement -Product databases -Price databases Facility management -Letting, sale, operations -Maintenance -Guaranties Demolition, refurbishment -Rebuild -Demolition -Restoration Construction management -Scheduling -Logistics, 4D

BIM-GIS Interaction Needs How can BIM interact with GIS during the design process to address issues related to site conditions and surroundings? How can a BIM be incorporated into a campus- wide GIS dataset for lifecycle facility management and operations? How can a 3-D GIS model of a facility be used to create an as-is BIM model for planning or design activities? More…

BIM-GIS Interaction Issues What are the best business practices? What tools (BIM, GIS, CMMS, IWMS, etc.) should be used to perform what functions? What level of detail should be stored in each environment? What format(s) should be used for data exchange? What standards exist or need to be developed? How can web services play a role? More...
