Chapter 14 Vocabulary

 Formal Definition: to plunge into water or the like; drench.  Example: After the Patriots won the game, they doused the coach with water.

 Formal Definition: something intended to deceive or defraud; to play a joke.  Example: We put green dye in his shampoo as an April Fool’s day hoax

 Formal Definition: a person or thing that is antagonistic or unfriendly.  Example: The white student talked to Melba with great hostility.

 Formal Definition: a state of great commotion, confusion, or disturbance.  Example: Since 9/11, the stock market has been in a state of turmoil.

 Formal Definition: to grip or hold tightly or firmly.  Example: After he woke up from a nightmare, the young child clutched his teddy bear.

 Formal Definition: to cry with low, plaintive, broken sounds.  Example: The dog whimpered because he wanted to be let out of the cage.

 Formal Definition: to eject from the stomach through the mouth;  Example: The baby spewed milk everywhere  2.to cast forth words in disgust or anger  Example: The white student spewed insults at the black student.

 Formal Definition: a noisy commotion; a heated controversy.  Example: The losing team caused a ruckus on the field.

 Formal Definition: a strong, wavelike, forward movement, rush, or sweep.  Example: The storm caused the water to surge onto the bridge.

 Formal Definition: to attack or batter.  Example: The students were bombarded by slushies.
