Objective, Agenda, & Homework Objective: Students will identify and annotate rhetorical devices in two speeches. Agenda: – Latin Roots Recap – Speech Sign-ups (Absent) – Highlight JFK Speech – Highlight MLK Speech Homework: Latin roots sheet is due next Wednesday.

Rhetorical Devices Repetition: a technique in which a sound, word, phrase, or line is repeated for effect or emphasis – Parallel Structure – Anaphora Allusion: an indirect reference to another literary work or to a famous person, place, or event Imagery: descriptive words or phrases that recreate sensory experiences for the reader using one or more of the five senses Metaphor: a figure of speech that makes a comparison between two things that are basically unlike but have something in common Rhetorical Question: a question asked solely to produce an effect or to make an assertion and not to elicit a reply, as “What is so rare as a day in June?”.
