Pass the Pen SYMBOL CHART INSTRUCTIONS  Add a symbol from your symbol chart to our group chart and draw a circle around it.  Add an interpretation to an existing symbol, draw a branch out from the symbol.  You can also mark from whose Point of View you are making your interpretation.  Return to your seat. Pass the pen to your neighbor. OUTSTANDING ESSAY LIST INSTRUCTIONS  List one attribute that makes an outstanding literary essay OR an aspect important to consider while writing.  Return to your seat. SSR Journal Reflect on what you are reading:  Text-to-self/Text-to-World.  Generate a theory about the theme of your reading.  Analyze a symbol and its relationship to theme/character development.

Building the Literary Essay HOW IS AN ESSAY LIKE A HOUSE?

The heart of the matter… Why do we write literary essays? Why do we read literary essays? Who are we writing for? AP 9 Score: Demonstrates exceptional insight and language facility. Descriptors include: mastery, insightful, sophisticated, complex, specific, consistent, and well-supported. AP 8: Presents a carefully reasoned argument and enlists appropriate evidence, excellent organization, content, insight, facile use of language, mastery of mechanics, effective use of essential essay components. AP 7: Purposeful arguments, great command of prose and style. Demonstrate clear understanding. AP 6: Accurately assess how the author uses techniques. Their arguments are generally sound in nature and adequately supported. Generally clear and effective.

I-B-C Essay Structure/Outline  Purpose:  Audience:  Introduction  Thesis:  Hook: (DO LAST)  3 Body Paragraphs  Supporting Idea 1 –  Point to support/deepen/explain your thesis:  Evidence (quote) :  Commentary:  Supporting Idea 2 –  Point to support/deepen/explain your thesis:  Evidence (quote) :  Commentary:  Supporting Idea 3 –  Point to support/deepen/explain your thesis:  Evidence (quote) :  Commentary:  Conclusion  I leave my reader with this insight: Instructions: Create this outline on your notebook paper. Leave at least 3-4 lines for each bullet point. Raise your hand once you’ve completed your outline before moving on to your essay writing.

Essay Prompt Focusing on one symbol from Fahrenheit 451, write an essay analyzing how that symbol functions in the work and what it reveals about the characters or themes of the work as a whole. Do not merely summarize the plot.  Essays should be typed.  You will submit BOTH a paper copy and E-copy.  Please bring a full PAPER draft for peer-review Thursday (October 1.)
