Nation continued: The term nation can mean different things to different people. The criteria for determining a nation will vary according to different perspectives: ①A nation exists when a people want to control their own destiny. ②A nation comes from a sense of belonging ③A nation expresses the soul of the people ④A nation is a community that we all imagine together ⑤A nation is a country defined by geographic or physical borders

Next glossary terms… Country: Nation-state means country. We can consider a “country” from strictly a geographic perspective like physical borders Nation-State: a country that is officially recognized by other countries or organizations in the world. International: means “between countries or nation- states”. Often referring to interactions between them (social, economic, political)
Nationalism: devotion and loyalty to one’s own nation; patriotism Patriotism: a feeling of love and devotion to one’s own country or nation (often considered a stronger feeling than nationalism). This refers to people who are willing to fight and possibly even die for their country. Ethnic: refers to a people who share a common characteristic such as: race, culture, language, and nation, because they share common ancestors Sovereignty: political authority and control over one’s own affairs
Next glossary terms… Self Determination: refers to the power to control one’s own affairs. A people within a nation of former empire can seek self- determination - the right to govern themselves, how they will live, and control of their economy and environment. Civic Nation: occurs when people (regardless of ethnicity, culture, language, religion, etc.) AGREE to live and work together and abide by the same laws.
Multinationalism: involving several nations Internationalism: cooperation among nations, for the promotion of their common good Ultranationalism: EXTREME devotion to a nation Supranationalism: when countries agree to abide by the decisions of an international organization

NATION We have already talked about the concepts of nation and state. Your job is to identify the elements from the following definitions/descriptions of Nation and State that you feel are important.

NATION: Nations can develop when a group of people sense that they share something in common and internalize that feeling. The resulting sense of belonging and acceptance may lead them to identify as a nation.

POWERFUL SYMBOLS OF NATIONALISM Your job is to create a symbol to represent ONE of the understandings of nation that you just completed as well as write a quick summary for that understanding. Before you start we must first identify what the qualities of a powerful symbol are.
Look at the various symbols below and use them to help you establish some criteria for what a powerful symbol looks like. Answer the following questions to help you establish criteria for a powerful symbol: 1.Why have these symbols lasted the test of time? 2.Why are they so recognizable? 3.What makes them so powerful?
Now you need to create some criteria for you symbol that you will use to identify if you have created a powerful symbol of Nation. When you are done, pick one of the understandings of nation that you would like to create a symbol for. Brainstorm some ideas, and create a rough copy of your symbol. When you are ready get the paper for the good copy, complete it, write a summary, and hand in!

NATION-STATE For the following explanation of Nation-State underline or highlight the concepts that you believe are the most important to the concept of Nation-State: NATION-STATE: Nation-states are considered sovereign because they are recognizable by other nations as having the right to govern themselves independently. Although the original term referred to political groupings whose makeup consisted of one nation only, nation-states are commonly recognized with several nations existing within them.
