Banking Strategy toward customized Precut Corneal Tissues Autors: 1 Urbanova,Y. 1,2 Netukova, M., 1,2 Kuchynka, P. The authors have no financial interest in the subject matter of this poster. 1 Ocular Tissue Bank OTB01/ International Eye Bank of Prague 2 Ophthalmology Department, 3rd Medical Faculty, Charles University, Vinohrady Teaching Hospital, Prague, Czech Republic

Purpose: Create a new strategy and the conditions for the emergence of a new project – lamellar program utilizing the Moria Microceratome system at the historically first facility of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe – International Eye Bank of Prague(IEBP)/ Ocular Tissue Bank (OTB01) Educational comprehensive training program was successfully organized in cooperation between Prague facility and the National Eye Bank Center in Memphis, Tennessee, state of the art facility, established by the Tissue Bank International( USA, MD, Baltimore) 2

 IEBP established 1991  Medical Director  Medical Advisor/s  7 full time staff members  external collaborators/collecting center  Recovery, processing, storage and distribution of eye tissue  500 – 600 tissues/year  Full thickness cornea for PKP (eyeball, sclera)  Special tissue processing for cornea transplant  MORIA microkeratome cornea preparation  DMEK lamellae for DMEK surgery  Supplies tissues to 23 transplant facilities in the Czech Republic  ISO 9001:2000, international accreditation for sharing Eye Banks (TBI/IFETB)  Currently after national inspection 3 TBI established 1962 National Eye Bank Center 2005 : 23 employees Process, store and distribute eye tissue, collected from 20US Eye Banks Cornea, Pre- Cut for DMEK, DSAEK Sterile cornea- irradiated cornea allograft Supplies tissues to 220 surgeons across United States Process app. 500 – 600 tissue/month MORIA microkeratome preparation Femtosecond Laser Cornea preparation

Method: Assure compliance with the Czech national regulations for further tissue processing build a new lab which meets criteria for Clean Room environment supply required instrumentation arrange successful training for Prague Eye bank delegates in an experienced and respected location create a standardize method for processing safe donor pre-cut corneal tissue 4

7 The National Eye Bank Processing Center, Memphis, Tennessee – Prague delegates certification

Results, outcome : Study on 20 research corneas NEBC, Memphis Very good results of the precut technique 8

How we process cornea for DSAEK XXII. EEBA Conference, Spain, Sitges, January

Evaluation and distribution for DSAEK 11

Conclusions: TBI standardized method for costumized Pre cut DSAEK tissues Local SOP developed 36 DSAEK lamellae processed and transplanted October 09 to March 2010 Well accepted by Czech surgeons No significant standard deviation before and after pre cut procedure The average lamellae thickness -154 microns 300µm mikrokeratome head used 350 µm head needed for tissue over 530mikrons 12
