How to use Chicago-style Notation Most often used in history and the humanities

Endnotes or Footnotes? Chicago notation is easiest with endnotes. Endnotes: A numbered list of all outside information used in your paper. Endnotes go AFTER the main paper but BEFORE the bibliography See page 386 of your handout

Numbering info in your paper Any time you use a piece of outside information, whether you put it in your own words or not, you need to note it. Example: –Governor John Andrew was not allowed to recruit black soldiers out of state. “Ostensibly,” writes Peter Buchard, “no recruiting was done outside of Massachusetts, but it was an open secret that Andrew’s agents were working far and wide.” 1 This number signifies the first piece of outside information in your paper. Each additional piece will be numbered consecutively (2, 3, 4, etc.)

Please Note… Even if you were to use information from the source noted with 1 again, it would need to be given the appropriate consecutive number. Don’t number all the information from one source with the same number. When your paper is done, you may have as few as 30 notes or as many as 60.

Assembling your endnotes When your paper is complete and all information has been numbered (make sure to keep track of what source each number represents!) you are ready to assemble your endnotes. Turn to page 398 of your handout

Endnote format At the top center of your page, type Notes Now, record the bibliographic information for each number in your paper. Follow the format on page 398 carefully. You only need to record complete information the first time a source is noted. After that, you can simply record the author and page number.

How do I note different types of sources? Pages explains how to note all types of sources, including , chat room exchanges, videos and interviews. Please follow the directions for each source precisely.

Bibliography A bibliography may seem redundant, but it is still necessary. Turn to page 399 of your handout. Note that the bibliography is alphabetized by authors’ last name. Unlike endnotes, bibliographic entries invert author names

Title Page and Text Your paper must have a title page that follows the parameters on page 396 of your handout. Make sure the text of your paper follows the parameters for margins and page numbers as described on page 397.

Font and spacing Manuscript should be double-spaced, 12 point font. You should stick to either Times New Roman or Courier New.

The magic of Courier New This is Times New Roman 12 pt double spaced Ideas for such a program include self-reflection and improvement models. Training could occur during a staff development workshop and could be supported and put into practice in the Advisory Program (see Strategy 2, Action Plan 3). Programs should focus on maximum student participation and often may be student led once all training has occurred. Teachers will always be present to support the implementation of programs.
