PROMOTING WHOLE BODY WELLNESS IN BEHAVIORAL HEALTH BY SEAN CAMPBELL

SAMHSA EIGHT DIMENSIONS OF WELLNESS

CORRELATIONS BETWEEN DIMENSIONS OF WELLNESS Mental Health and the Workplace In a 3-month period, individuals with depression miss an average of 4.8 workdays and suffer 11.5 days of reduced productivity. 1 Depression is estimated to cause 200 million lost workdays each year at a cost to employers of $17 to $44 billion. 2,3 Mental Health and Cardiovascular Health About 50% of people with behavioral health disorders smoke, compared to 23% of the general population. 4 People with mental illnesses and addictions smoke half of all cigarettes produced, and are only half as likely as other smokers to quit. 5 Smoking-related illnesses cause half of all deaths among people with behavioral health disorders % of the behavioral healthcare workforce smokes (versus only 1.7% of primary care physicians) 7 People with heart disease who also experience depression and anxiety have triple the risk of dying from heart disease than those without depression and anxiety. 8 Notes: 1 Valenstein M, Vijan S, Zeber JE, Boehm K, Buttar A. THEMES IN PROMOTING WELLNESS 1.Universalizes the topic of mental health. 2.Presents a clear vision of the solution. 3.Holistic in understanding all the moving parts. 4.Allows us to find a starting point for engagement. 5.Person-centered in giving the individual the power to grow in their journey How does this apply to the individuals and families that we serve? How does this apply to staff/workers who serve these individuals and families? How does this apply to communities-at-large?
