born Marcus Rothkovich in Dvinsk Russia, came to the US in He was largely self-taught as an artist. In the 1940's Rothko work the nonobjective style that he is best known for. His style is part of as the color-field branch of abstract expressionism. This style of painting is when an artist takes large, hazily defined rectangles of color and paints them on the canvas. He used anywhere from bright happy colors to dark murky colors to convey his emotions and a sense of spirituality. Nonobjective art is another way to refer to Abstract art or non-representationalart. Essentially, the artwork does not represent or depict a person, place or thing in the natural world. Usually, the content of the work is its color, shapes, brushstrokes, size, scale, and, in some cases, its process. Color field paintings are defined by solid areas of color that cover the whole canvas.
