Crushing Martian Regolith Simulant Formal Status Update Two Members: Nick Sestito & Christopher Graham November 4 th, 2015

Heating Schematic Progression -Very bare representation -Only presents details of forced convection, velocity and CO2 -More detail added to system -Temperatures, pressure, power source, devices added

Heating Schematic Progression -Needed to contain pressure -Explanation for grain disposal -Paddle wheel not practical in Mars Conditions -Closed/Looped the system

Current Heating Schematic Water collection in more practical location Regolith Filter added Grains added to the hopper at once Notations Corrected  E.g. Heat Exchanger, Auger

Thermal Model Corrections Did not account for grain mixture 15% pure water & 85% Regolith simulant (JSC -1A) Mixture Properties recalculated Incorrect amount of significant Figures

Thermal Power Requirement Justification for minimal power requirement Regolith remains solid Q = mcdeltaT Water: 3 phase changes  Latent Heat of Vaporization & Fusion 5 MW Available Thermal Power 7 kW required (at most)

Processing Rates Regolith Processing Rate:Water Requirement: Spacing Requirement: Grain Size (mm)Pipe Diameter (cm)Pipe Diameter (ft) Heating Pipe Determination

Crusher Selection Previous crushers for industrial use  Weighing 1.2 and 5.5 tons, the industrial jaw and cone crushers were to unwieldy for space  Designed to process amounts of material in tons per hour, we need 100kg, or about 1/10 of a ton processed a day. Change target specifications to “lab crusher”

Chipmunk jaw crusher This crusher:  Runs on 3 horse power or 2.24 KW  4 inch by 9 inch jaw opening 1.6 mm for longest dimension of output.  10x10x10 cm blocks fit with in the 4x9 inch jaws (10 cm is just under 4 inches)  Crusher weighs only 259kg  Crusher capacity(how much it can crush in 1 hour) is 364kg, over 3.5 times our daily requirement.

Crusher changes Needs to be altered for mars atmosphere/temperature Potential need for a cooling system to counteract heat generation from crushing process  Cooling jackets common, alternatively, design around mars atmosphere doing most of the cooling. Change materials to those with high strength/weight ratios and durability in low temp.
