 The thesis is the guiding statement for your essay – it tells exactly what your essay will be about.  It is typically the last sentence of your introduction  It can stand alone – it can be read separate from your essay and make sense  In the short story “The Scarlet Ibis”, the author explores the idea that love and cruelty can coexist in the human heart.

Even though they love and care about each other, young children can be cruel to each other. This cruelty is a natural part of child development and it is something that all children must endure to grow into strong adults. In “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, the narrator admits that he was cruel to his brother Doodle. At times, his cruelty is excessive and beyond the boundaries of natural sibling rivalry. Many who read the story even hold him accountable for Doodle’s death. However, most of his actions indicate that the narrator loves his brother and that he wants the best for him.

 It is clear that the narrator really did love his brother and was looking out for him. Although he could be mean sometimes, his intent was not to harm his brother and it certainly wasn’t to kill him. This story demonstrates that there can be terrible consequences when people let anger and frustrations influence their choices. The largest lesson from Doodle’s tragic death is that people need to look out for each other. If a person truly cares for someone, then they should act in ways that show it and put the other’s needs before their own.

 Through the characterization of Captain Jaggery, Avi shows that absolute power is destructive.  Through the main characters, Avi shows that people should not judge others based on appearance or social status.  Through the characterization of Charlotte, Avi shows that people must find their own identity.  Through the characterization of Charlotte, Avi shows that people need to follow their hearts instead of other people’s expectations.

Example paragraph start At first, Charlotte judges Zachariah based on his social status, then later judges him based on his actions. For example, when Charlotte first meets Zachariah, she says, “Never had I met with such impertinence! That this Zachariah, my inferior, a cook, should tell such a slanderous tale…was deeply mortifying” ( Avi 42). This shows that Charlotte sees Zachariah as beneath her because he is a cook. It also demonstrates that she does not believe the information he gives her simply because he is of a lower class. Charlotte goes beyond just judging him, though, and is ‘mortified’, or horrified, that her ‘inferior’ would attempt to advise her. However, later in the book…
