Welcome to 6 th grade GT ELA and Math Melissa Eaddy – Math Jennifer Merritt - Math Jane Petrone – ELA Billie Wharton – ELA Cecilia Knapp- Math Lauren Prosser - ELA

Middle School GT Programs *Students in Grade 6 are served through GT classes in ELA and Math *These classes are an hour and a half in length *These subjects are accelerated and taught with greater rigor, depth and complexity *Students should possess a sense of personal and social responsibility sufficient to keep up with the individual workload and to contribute meaningfully to group efforts

 Must maintain a final grade of C or above  Score exemplary or met on PASS (most recent available score)  Entering the first stage of the GT program in grade 6 does not automatically guarantee a continued placement in this program  If the student’s yearly average is a D or F, the student could be dropped from the program GT Criteria

 Another major shift is the type of projects given  Some common core based projects  Critical thinking projects, textual based projects, creative thinking projects  Some projects are major ones = test grade, some projects are “mini” projects = quiz grade Projects

 Grading scale remains the same from 5 th grade to 6 th grade: A= B= C= D= F= below 70  What changes from 5 th to 6 th is the level of work and intensity of work required of each student  This accelerated program covers 3 years of SC Curriculum within 2 years. So, by 8 th grade your child will be getting high school credit for Math and ELA Grading

 Complete approximately 4- 6 class novels a year  Bulk of the reading is done outside of class  Schedules given to show students when they should be at each reading check-point  Students will be expected to discuss and analyze their reading in class  Graded work includes classwork, reading checks, quizzes, tests, novel based projects, and presentations Class Novels

 Students are still expected to keep up with independent reading while working on class novels  Independent reading time given in class  Meant to help students foster their own interests and develop a love for reading whatever they like Independent Reading

 Writing will be done inside and outside of class  Students will be required to keep a reading-writing notebook  Time will be given in class, but students will need to work on assignments outside of class also  A required research project will be assigned during the year Writing

 Rising 6 th grade students will be responsible for reading two books from the SC Junior Book Award Nominee List:  Choose one Nonfiction book from list  Choose one Fiction book from list  Complete a different assignment for each book  Vital that summer reading assignments are completed- this is the beginning unit for next year junior-book-award-nominees Summer Reading

 There are approximately 12 7 th grade standards embedded into the 6 th grade GT program. Students are expected to maintain their notebook by taking notes daily, show all work, be able to explain how they got their answer. Also, work in collaborative groups. Math

Homework ELA: *Vocabulary is given weekly. Students have assignment choices. *Occasionally practice and review assignments are assigned. *In addition, students are expected to read 20 minutes nightly. Math: * Assigned usually 2-3 times weekly. *In addition, students are expected to take their notebooks home nightly and review daily notes. Try a few problems from math class on a separate sheet of paper, then check against notes.
