What’s Really Happening  71 life years vs. 17 life years  2014 Projection: 15,000 children will be diagnosed with cancer  90% will have a 5-year survival rate  1,960 children 0-19 will die in 2014 from cancer  In the last 20 years, one drug has been approved  For every dollar donated, only one penny go to childhood cancer research  71 life years vs. 17 life years  2014 Projection: 15,000 children will be diagnosed with cancer  90% will have a 5-year survival rate  1,960 children 0-19 will die in 2014 from cancer  In the last 20 years, one drug has been approved  For every dollar donated, only one penny go to childhood cancer research

What Isn’t Being Done & Why  There’s minimal awareness, funding, and research  Quick question: Who’s heard of Alex’s Lemonade Stand?  Difference between American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen, and ALSF  An explanation from Dr. Archie Bleyer, a scientist for the American Cancer Society  There’s minimal awareness, funding, and research  Quick question: Who’s heard of Alex’s Lemonade Stand?  Difference between American Cancer Society, Susan G. “The lack of clinical trials for this age group is also partly due to financial limitations. For the pharmaceutical industry, what is their motivation to develop agents for patients for whom they make little to no profit? The percentage of adolescents and young adults with cancer, although higher compared with children, still represents a very small portion of the total cancer patient population. The drugs companies see this, but, we need to overcome it.” (ACS 1) - Dr. Archie Bleyer no profit = no reason to help children in need

Why There Needs To Be More Research  Children can’t avoid cancer  Cancer is the lead killer for children  Even if they beat cancer, they only have approximately 5 extra years of life  They deserve to live their life like everyone else  Children can’t avoid cancer  Cancer is the lead killer for children  Even if they beat cancer, they only have approximately 5 extra years of life  They deserve to live their life like everyone else

A Simple Chain Reaction More people know the problem More people spread the word Not all, but some people donate Scientists have more funds to test more drugs and get them approved More people know the problem More people spread the word Not all, but some people donate Scientists have more funds to test more drugs and get them approved

Why Will This Work?  Through social media, over $100 MILLION dollars was raised  Before the IBC, not many knew of ALS  After videos were posted, everyone looked it up  People realized the severity and need for research funds  People donated
