Traffic Safety Awareness

Partnering to fight crime for a safer Greensboro Traffic Safety Awareness The GPD awareness campaign for May focuses on Traffic Safety. This presentation will cover:  Vehicles  Bicycles  Trains

Partnering to fight crime for a safer Greensboro Vehicles  It’s against the law in North Carolina for drivers under the age of 18 to use a cell phone while a vehicle is in motion.  Exception: Drivers under 18 can use a cell phone if they are talking to a 911 Dispatcher, parent or legal guardian.  NC law bans ALL drivers (except Police/Fire) from texting or reading a text while a vehicle is in motion  Be familiar with your route before you start on your way; not while you are in the middle of your route.  Never give in to “road rage” – it has dangerous consequences.

Partnering to fight crime for a safer Greensboro Vehicles cont’d  Buckle up! North Carolina law requires ALL passengers in a vehicle to be properly restrained even if in the back seat.  Indicate your intention! Use your turn signal, make proper lane changes, always pass carefully and check your blind spots.

Partnering to fight crime for a safer Greensboro Bicycles  Register your bike by contacting the police department. Between bicycles are stolen each month in Greensboro.  Traffic laws also apply to cyclists – you must yield right-of-way to cars and pedestrians.  If under 16 years of age, you are required to wear a helmet.  When riding at night, your bike must have front lamps visible up to 300 feet and a rear red light or reflector visible up to 200 feet.  Never operate your bike along RR tracks, on RR bridges, or through RR tunnels.

Partnering to fight crime for a safer Greensboro Trains  If your vehicle stalls on a railroad crossing, get out and clear away! Trains are closer and faster than you think.  All NC train tracks are private property. Trespassing is illegal and very dangerous.  You cannot judge the distance and speed of an upcoming train. Never try to ‘beat a train’.  Only cross tracks at designated crossings.  Never drive around lowered RR crossing gates – it’s illegal and deadly.

Partnering to fight crime for a safer Greensboro Other Resources  To report a traffic signal malfunction or bulb failure, call CITY (2489) from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. After hours, contact the non-emergency line at  To see real-time map on information on traffic events, visit  NC Train safety information:  Bicycle safety information:
