Math facts Children should know their addition and subtraction facts to 10. If your child has mastered these, to put him/her ahead, you may begin practicing the facts to 18. Addition and Subtraction

Flash Cards You can buy flash cards at many different stores such as K-Mart, Wal- Mart, School Stuff, Teacher Store, Office Max, and even Wise Way. Another option is to make your own flash cards on index cards. (If you cover the cards with clear Contact paper the cards will last longer.

Software Programs We recommend the following programs: Turbo Math Math Blaster Treasure Math Storm Treasure Mountain

Practice, Practice, Practice When you are driving in your car, ask your child math problems. At the store, use real-life examples of math. (If I put 2 oranges in the bag and add 3 more, how many oranges will we buy?)

Seeing Math Problems Sometimes children need to “see” math problems. We use different objects at school called manipulatives. At home you can use cereal, macaroni, buttons, pennies, etc. to set up a problem. Example: If I have 12 pennies and I give you 5, how many pennies will I have left? Your child can take 12 pennies, move 5 away and count and see that there are 7 pennies left.

2 nd Grade Math Addition and subtraction with regrouping Time Money Measurement Geometry, Fractions, and Probabilities Exploring Multiplication and Division

The Butterfly By Kazantzakis from Zorba the Greek I remember one morning when I discovered a cocoon in the back of a tree just as a butterfly was making a hole in its case and preparing to come out. I waited awhile, but it was too long appearing and I was impatient. I bent over it and breathed on it to warm it. I warmed it as quickly as I could and the miracle began to happen before my eyes, faster than life. The case opened; the butterfly started slowly crawling out, and I shall never forget my horror when I saw how its wings were folded back and crumpled; the wretched butterfly tried with its whole trembling body to unfold them. Bending over it, I tried to help it with my breath, in vain.

It needed to be hatched out patiently and the unfolding of the wings should be a gradual process in the sun. Now it was too late. My breath had forced the butterfly to appear all crumpled, before its time. It struggled desperately and, a few seconds later, died in the palm of my hand. That little body is, I do believe, the greatest weight I have on my conscience. For I realize today that it is a mortal sin to violate the great laws of nature. We should not hurry, we should not be impatient, but we should confidently obey the eternal rhythm.

Remember that each child is like that butterfly and develops according to his or her own plan.

Thank you for coming!
