21st CAA Cross Calibration Workshop Leiden, March 2015 WHISPER report WHISPER team LPC2E/CNRS

Outline Management Status of processing pipelines Status of dataset production Delivery plan Status of documentation Calibration and cross calibration activity Action items Conclusion

WHISPER team  PI: Jean-Louis Rauch  Ops: Pierrette Décréau  Data manager: X. Vallières (part time)  2 software engineers (under CNES contract) for operations, data processing, software maintenance/development, support to scientists + significant CAA activity contributions : o A. De Nazelle (since July 2012) o S. Aoutou (since May 2013) CAA engineer: I. Galkina (since October 2011) CNES support  support: subject to CNES internal extension review (June 2014) → still waiting for review conclusions → support will decrease ESA support  ESA contract #18064 → contract change notice #4 was sent to ESA by CNRS administration Management

Status of processing pipelines Mass archives pipeline  fully operational with regards to antenna length Mass archives reprocessing ( WHI13-AI-01 )  Fully operational  Reprocessing is in progress

Status of processing pipelines Details of density production  Now we are using method « Low cut-off Active », so we treat almost all the data  We are trying to retrieve as much information as we can, and to be as precise as possible  We treat all regions at the same pass  Plasmasphere « has changed ». Just from Active it is sometimes impossible to say if the signature is Fuh or Fp. Results need careful validation (i.e. active vs natural comparison) and several iterations.

Active low cut-off Status of processing pipelines we treat almost all the regions

Technical difficulties  hardware is aging : several SUN workstations broke down recently  no possible maintenance/renewal  Solution: virtual machines under SUN server Status of processing pipelines

Status of documentation UG will be updated according to CAA recommendation (PM) before OR10. WHISPER CAA documentation

 For his study at the magnetopause, Adrian Blagau needed to check the quality of Cluster/CIS density data by comparing it with the WHISPER electron density.  The event involves Cluster 4 and occurred on 26 January 2001 Density – CIS/CODIF calibration and cross calibration activity WHISPER

Density – CIS/CODIF calibration and cross calibration activity WHISPER

The plot compares CIS/CODIF (in black) with: - WHISPER active (red) and natural (green) -estimated electron density by using EFW data (in blue) The last panel is a superposition of panels 2 and 3. Taking into account the conditions for event (interferences for WHI, CODIF in low-sensitivity mode), the agreement between WHISPER data and CODIF is very good. (plot by Adrian Blagau) Ann. Geophys., 33, 79-91, 2015 calibration and cross calibration activity WHISPER

 Look for cases in plasmasphere where:  Fq and Fuh are well detected  Strong Fq alignment deviation  There are PEACE data for these regions  Check if there is correlation between electron energy distribution (PEACE) and Fq alignment deviation (WHISPER) calibration and cross calibration activity WHISPER Correlation between Fq alignment deviation (WHISPER) and electron distribution in energy (PEACE)

Action Items WHI12-AI-07WHISPEROPEN To investigate if and how the measurements during the commissioning phase could be delivered to the CAA.  Data has been processed but not delivered yet  investigation needed for some errors (December 2000)

Action Items WHI-14-AI-01WHISPER to clarify BM3 operations: different kind of data are returned, wave spectra look different likely due to different gains used, however it is not fully clear if this is represented in EVENT datasets; explain also reasons for frequent data gaps around BM3 -BM3 data is acquired in ‘default BM3’ mode with operational parameters that may differ from before/after (i.e different gains) -it is represented in EVENT datasets (Gain command number ) - data gaps are due to instruments initialisation & calibration (thanks, Keith)

Action Items gap of WHISPER data before every BM3s: Due to DWP reset ~3 minutes gap of WHISPER data after every BM3s: Due to EFW reset and re-initialisation 6 minutes BM3 data with PSD values different from normal mode ones.

14 minutes WHISPER data gap after BM3: This happens once per orbit, due to STAFF and WHISPER calibration ( 11 minutes) added to EFW reset. PSD values in BM3 modes are of smaller order than in NM ones: this is due to different instrument modes programming (i.e. gain and receiving antenna)

WHI14-AI-02 to investigate the effect of gain and antenna baseline in the calibrated PSD values around BM3 intervals: PSD appears to vary while one can assume it is constant across these short time intervals - Same as previous - Gain command number in BM3 indicates an automatic gain applied to the signal. The gain can change to minimise overflows.

Action Items WHI14-AI-08WHISPEROPEN to update UG according to suggestions made during the progress meetings Will be done before OR10.

Action Items CC20-AI-16WHISPEROPEN To investigate if and how the developed inventory tool could be used for their dataset monitoring. ( see Annex 12 ) The datasets are different (with different time spans), and there are no benefits from inventory tool.

 Production is on-going  Density production requires a lot of manpower  Method «Active low cut-off» allows us a better coverage  Continuous efforts are made to maintain a steady density coverage, quality and regular deliveries  extension: production level will depend strongly on manpower resources, priority will be given to easiest regions Conclusions
