AGENDA 1.Outlining the Sula essay – some guidance. 2.The AP Literature Exam - notes. 3.Sample AP Poetry Set. HOMEWORK: continue to work on the revised Sula essays – DUE Friday.

The immediate future: Revised draft of the Sula essay. Implementation of the AP essay scoring guide. Sample AP multiple choice questions. Aristotle’s Poetics: understanding classical texts and their implications on contemporary literary theory. Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex: understanding the archetype.

The Sula Essay The revised draft of the essay is DUE Friday, November 13th. Typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman font. Approximately three pages in length: at least five fully developed paragraphs. Will be assessed using the AP Literature Essay Score Guide. -What does this mean?

Tips for literature-based writing: Use the novel to support everything that you say. Always interpret and analyze the text. “In doing this, Morrison suggests…” Being overly explanatory is better than the opposite.

Sample Paragraph: Introduce the main idea of the paragraph – make sure that it supports the thesis. Provide the textual example: Nel remarks, “…” (24). Analytical paraphrase of the quote: Morrison suggests… Connection to the thesis: be specific.

The AP Literature Exam: As we move forward, we will do so with an increased awareness of the AP course and exam requirements. In order to do this, we must know what the test includes and what it values. Two sections: multiple choice and free response (essay).

The AP Literature Exam: Multiple Choice:  60 minutes.  questions.  Approximately 4 passages: 2 poetry and 2 prose. Free Response (essay):  120 minutes.  3 essays: 1 poetry, 1 prose, 1 free response.  40 minutes per essay, suggested.

Sample Poetry Section: Read the poem twice through - annotate. Utilize the TP-CAST approach to better address the poem as a whole. After completing this interpretive work, address the multiple choice questions: use POE.
