Department of Meteorology Maldives Air Pollution Monitoring ► Instruments of the Male’ Declaration are not operational except Passive Sampler, which is installed at Hanimaadhoo Airport in 2003 and is operational without any break MALDIVES is established under :- 1.Atmospheric Brown Cloud (ABC) Project 2.Male’ Declaration on Control and Prevention of Air Pollution ► Instruments of the ABC are installed at Maldives Climate Observatory – Hanimaadhoo (MCO-H)

Department of Meteorology Maldives MALDIVES Hanimaadhoo Island

Department of Meteorology Maldives MCO-H MALDIVES

Department of Meteorology Maldives MALDIVES ►Wet only collector is operational Filters and samples are sent to MISU, ► In Addition of NO 2 and SO 2, O 3 filters are started to expose in May 2007 ► It is using for ABC or Male’ Declaration ? Where does DATA goes? ► Exposed filters are send to IVL W.Collector & P. Sampler

Department of Meteorology Maldives MALDIVES SO 2

Department of Meteorology Maldives MALDIVES NO 2

MALDIVES Pollution varies

Department of Meteorology Maldives MALDIVES ► Recently started exposing O 3 and received June 2007 DATA, which was 5 µg/m 3 For Effective Awareness:- ► It is required Pollution DATA and its impact to convince the public ► It is Required Technical people

Department of Meteorology Maldives  Lack of Human resources in the field of Atmospheric Chemistry  No arrangement for in-house repair and maintenance of Equipments used for Air Pollution Monitoring is made due to lack specialized training in the field  Availability of technical and financial support to conduct local studies on air pollution MALDIVES Constraints

Department of Meteorology Maldives  Include awareness on air pollution in the programme conducted by DoM for school children and general public  Construct Air Pollution Monitoring instrumentation Tower and a new building at Gan in the next year to establish a fully functional ABC station in the Island, if funds could be procured  Three staff of DoM to be trained on Atmospheric Chemistry, one post graduate level and two graduate level in the next 4 years if financial support could be raised MALDIVES Future Plans
