Internal and External Assessment Internal Assessment Internal assessments are used to assess skills and knowledge that cannot be tested in an exam, e.g. speeches, research projects and performances. External Assessment External assessments are by examination at the end of the year. For some subjects, e.g. Technology or Visual Arts, students submit a portfolio of their work at the end of year. It is important to answer every question in every standard to maximise your opportunities to succeed. Reduced number of standards and/or credits per course Pre-requisites for further study

Further Assessment Opportunity / Resubmission Further Assessment Opportunity One further assessment opportunity may be given where practicable. Resubmission Where a minor error has been made, a student may be invited to review and modify that section of their work to achieve a specific grade.

Absence from Assessments Absence from an Internal Assessment If you are absent from an assessment due to medical reasons, a medical certificate must be provided. If you are absent for any other unforseen circumstance (e.g. bereavement), the teacher must be notified by your parent/caregiver. If you are aware that you will be absent from an assessment (e.g. for a specialist appointment) an arrangement may be made with your teacher in advance Absence from an External Assessment If you are absent for any reason from an external assessment, evidence must be provided (e.g medical certificate) There is no further assessment opportunity for a missed external assessment.

Authenticity and Extensions Authenticity All work submitted for NCEA must be your own Students who submit work other than their own will be given a Not Achieved grade for that standard. The student will also be disciplined. Extensions An extension may be applied for if you know in advance that you will be unable to complete an internal assessment task on or by the due date. A written explanation explaining the reason for the request must be signed by your parent/caregiver and given to the classroom teacher. If you are absent on the day the assessment is due, alternative arrangements must be made to ensure that the work is still handed in that day.
