Support for Point Cloud Coverages in ISO TC211 1 June 2015 C Douglas O’Brien Canada

ISO TC211 Standards ISO TC211 has developed a number of standards that address Imagery, Gridded and Coverage Data. ISO TC211 WG6 has developed 8 standards, Technical Specifications, and Technical Reports and has 2 new standards and 2 revisions in work. Additional joint work is planned with OGC to address the revision of the basic ISO Coverage Geometry and Functions standard and to adopt the OGC r2 “GML Application Schema - Coverages" (renamed “Geographic information - Implementation Schema for Coverages” )

Standards Development Published standards ISO/TR 19121:2000 Geographic information - Imagery and gridded data ISO :2008 Geographic information - Preference model - Part 2: Imagery ISO :2009 Geographic information - Metadata - Part 2: Extensions for imagery and gridded data ISO/TS 19129:2009 Geographic information - Imagery, gridded and coverage data framework ISO/TS 19130:2010 Geographic information - Imagery sensor models for geopositioning ISO/TS Geographic information - Imagery sensor models for geopositioning - Part 2: SAR, InSAR, lidar and sonar ISO/TS :2012 Geographic information - Metadata - XML Schema Implementation - Part 2 : Extensions for imagery and gridded data ISO/TS Geographic information - Calibration and validation of remote sensing imagery sensors - Part 1: Optical sensor Under preparation WI Geographic information - Calibration and validation of remote sensing imagery sensors - Part 1: Lidar WI Geographic information - Imagery sensor models for geopositioning (Revision of ISO/TS 19130:2010) WI Geographic information - Content components and encoding rules for imagery and gridded data WI Geographic information - Metadata - Part 2: Extensions for imagery and gridded data Related ISO 19123:2005 Geographic information -- Schema for coverage geometry and functions

Satellite Imagery Many of the TC211 WG6 standards relate to Satellite Imagery and remote sensing, including bathymetric sonar. Spot Image 4 satellite image over part of Quebec Canada.

Coverage Types A full range of coverage types are addressed in ISO 19123, including the Point Set (Point Cloud), TIN, Quadrilateral Grid, Riemann Grid Thiessen Polygon The Point Set Geometry and Riemann Grid geometry should be of particular interest to applications like LIDAR and Hydrographic Bathymetry.

Hydrographic Applications TC211 WG6 worked closely with the International Hydrographic Organization on the development of S-100, the Universal Hydrographic Data Model standard. A number of IHO standardized products make use of point set coverages. The point set is well used in ocean hydrography to represent depth soundings. A vector field gridded or point set coverage is used for the representation of flows such as river currents or winds.

LIDAR Several years ago the ISPRS (International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing) proposed to sponsor the LIDAR standard developed by the ASPRS (American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing) in ISO TC211 through WG6. Unfortunately there did not seem to be the resources available so this has not advanced. Also the following standards address Lidar. ISO/TS Geographic information - Imagery sensor models for geopositioning - Part 2: SAR, InSAR, lidar and sonar WI Geographic information - Calibration and validation of remote sensing imagery sensors - Part 1: Lidar
