EBSCOHost Your source for periodical and journal articles. 31 slides

EBSCOHost is a valuable tool…. for locating back issues of magazines, journals and newspapers; for searching for a specific article if the date and title are known; and for scanning a topic to see the amount of information available.

EBSCOHost can be tricky….. because it is a gateway page that leads to other databases; because it offers so many results; and because it requires a level of precision in choosing keywords.

To use EBSCOHost…… you must first go to PowerLibrary….. Remember that you can access PowerLibrary here at school or from home if you have a Public Library card!

Once you have opened PowerLibrary… On the main PowerLibrary page, choose EBSCOHost.

Open EBSCOhost Web…..

Then you have the choice of opening databases. You may choose one or even all of them. Choose databases By clicking the box Next to the description Of the database.

After choosing the database….. Go to the bottom of the screen and click continue…….

Now you can begin your search….. The search page looks like this…..

Enter a search term and click search……

Results look like this……

Results offer several things…… A way to narrow the results… A list of articles found by the search term …….

Results offer html (text only) and PDF (copy of the article in original format) forms……

What’s the difference? Both will give you the information, but it will appear very differently. This is HTML form……

This is the same article in PDF form….

HTML versus PDF…… While both will give the same information of the main text, choose PDF whenever possible. PDF will include images and sidebars that may be left out of the HTML article.

Saving the results…….. Results can be saved by adding results to a folder. This folder then can be printed, saved, or ed later.

To open an article…… When opening an article- please note: –In order to get the full text of the article, click on the link marked HTML text or PDF text. –Clicking on the title of the result will give only an ABSTRACT, not the entire text of the article.

Saved results appear this way….

A caution…….. Some articles appear as abstracts only….without full text.

Abstracts are easy to spot… Abstracts will not list a PDF or HTML as a text choice.

Citations…… EBSCOHost articles offer two areas of citation information. Usually these are at the top of the article and at the very bottom. Enough information is provided to allow for ease of use with a citation program such as EasyBib.

Citation information at the top…

Citation information at the bottom…….
