Western Political Thought Starts in Ancient Greece Many of the ideas that we believe in today were first thought of and practiced in Ancient Greece. Greece is a country in the Mediterranean. It has a unique geography that helped it develop some of these ideas. Geography often plays a huge roll in how things happen in history.

Greek Geography Greece has many islands and mountains so communities grew up separately and were able to form their own way of doing things without being conquered by others or pushed into one big group. Greece has a very mild climate, so its easy to grow lots of food. This leaves time for people to do other things, like think up new ideas and try new ways of doing things without starving to death.

Please look at Pg. 9A- Reading Like a Historian Find the section labeled CLOSE READING. Today we are going to be practicing some techniques for reading text and pictures. How is reading a picture different than reading text? What do you need to do differently? Tell your partner!

Reading Pictures Vs. Text Pictures – The size of things counts – Color is important – Things in the middle or the top or big are more important – You still have to look at the background to get the whole picture Text – Words have meaning – Big or colorful words are more important (like headings or vocab) – You can skip some things and still get it.

Aristotle’s Politics In his book Politics, Aristotle describes the role that politics and the political community must play in bringing about a good and virtuous life for citizens. Essentially, Politics is a guide on how to set up and run a government that will be good for the nation and the people that live under it.
