Western Political Thought Starts in Ancient Greece Many of the ideas that we believe in today were first thought of and practiced in Ancient Greece. Greece is a country in the Mediterranean. It has a unique geography that helped it develop some of these ideas. Geography often plays a huge roll in how things happen in history.

Greek Geography Greece has many islands and mountains so communities grew up separately and were able to form their own way of doing things without being conquered by others or pushed into one big group. Greece has a very mild climate, so its easy to grow lots of food. This leaves time for people to do other things, like think up new ideas and try new ways of doing things without starving to death.

Please look at Pg. 9A- Reading Like a Historian Find the section labeled CLOSE READING. Today we are going to be practicing some techniques for reading text and pictures. How is reading a picture different than reading text? What do you need to do differently? Tell your partner!

Reading Pictures Vs. Text Pictures – The size of things counts – Color is important – Things in the middle or the top or big are more important – You still have to look at the background to get the whole picture Text – Words have meaning – Big or colorful words are more important (like headings or vocab) – You can skip some things and still get it.

Skills Practice Today you will be Identifying Claims and Critical Thinking: Making Inferences Tell your partner: What is a Claim? What is an Inference?

Find this page Critical Thinking Practice: What do Artifacts Tell us about What People Believed in Ancient Greece? Use this handout to answer the questions on Pg. 14A: Greek Contributions to Western Political Thought

Summarize: Based on these artifacts, what do Greeks think about people’s ability to think and reason? Sentence Frame: The jury selection machine and the voting stones show that Greeks thought __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________. Advanced: What is your evidence? What about the artifacts supports your claim? __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________. Even More Advanced: Explain HOW your evidence supports your claim. __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________. This question is important because I will grade it with the Critical Thinking Rubric.

Aristotle Aristotle ( BCE): ancient Greek philosopher and scientist, who studied and wrote about the sciences and many of the arts, including biology, botany, chemistry, ethics, history, logic, philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, physics, poetics, political theory, psychology, and zoology.

Aristotle’s Politics In his book Politics, Aristotle describes the role that politics and the political community must play in bringing about a good and virtuous life for citizens. Essentially, Politics is a guide on how to set up and run a government that will be good for the nation and the people that live under it.

Start on Pg. 14B-C Large text is the original (translated by Mr. Heiken from the original Greek) Small text is a simplified translation. Use BOTH to find out what Aristotle has to say about government. Feel free to annotate or write on these quotes to help you read them. Use your Reading Strategies pg. 15A or any others you know about!

Aristotle Questions Hypothesize: What does “rule of law” mean? ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ What is Aristotle’s claim? Write it in your own words: ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________

Identify a claim: Which section (A-D) is Aristotle’s claim or thesis? Choose the section you think is Aristotle’s main idea and rewrite his claim in your own words. ___________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ ________________________________________ Summarize: Using the above text, summarize what Aristotle thinks each section of government should do. Write your summary in your own words and include only the essentials. ___________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________ ________________________________________
