Post-WWI: Preview Palestinian-Israeli Britain, France, Russia, and the United States defeated Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. Who then was in charge of the land formally controlled by the Ottomans? (The West)

Rise of Nationalism In the Middle East Nationalism was a growing force in the early 20th century and U.S. President Woodrow Wilson advocated self-determination. Wilson urged that all nationalities within the former Ottoman Empire be assured "an absolutely unmolested opportunity of autonomous development." But the Europeans were more intent on preserving, and even expanding, their colonial empires, they wanted access to oil, which was starting to be discovered in large quantities in the Mideast. The Europeans also wanted to loosen Islam's hold on the region by promoting secular government. – Foreign powers trying to impose their own order would not be welcomed in places "whose inhabitants for more than a thousand years have followed faith in a holy law that governs all life, including government and politics."

Roots of Arab Israeli Conflicts-Do First Sheet End of WWI Arab Ethnic Groups Wanting to Start their Own Autonomous Countries Zionist Movement

Zionism Zionism is an late 19 th early 20 th century movement for establishing the Independent State of Israel in Palestine where Jews could live safely live. Why do Zionists want this land in Palestine!?

Causes-TERRITORY Palestinians-Arabs that have lived in the area of Israel for 2000 years were forced to move. Palestinian’s were forced off their lands and into refugee camps.

Causes-RELIGION Palestine is the Holy Land for these major religions. Jews and Muslims each want to control the Chosen City of Jerusalem.

Causes-NATIONALISM Jews are given land in Palestine. Problem! Israel is supported and recognized by the West! (US and Europe) Christian Influence in Islamic Areas. Palestinians reject the Jewish Claim to the Holy Land and strive to claim a homeland. Believe Israel is Arab land and should be solely under the sphere of Arab control and influence.

Quick Check T/F: Israeli’s are inhabitants of the state of Israel and predominantly practice the Jewish Faith. True! T/F: There is a large population of Muslims that live within the country of Israel. True! This is why there is so much conflict! Both groups want to control this land!
