Reflection of Sound – The Big Ideas Sound waves can be reflected off a solid surface. Reflected sound has to travel farther from its source than the original sound. We hear reflected sound later than the original sound. An echo is the effect of hearing a direct sound and its reflected sound separately.

Reflection of Sound – Prior Knowledge Students have been interacting with and fascinated by sounds since birth. It will help for students to use the FUN- damental, Sound, Heat, and Light, to review sound. It will be helpful if students have:Sound, Heat, and Light –listened to an echo. –produced an echo of their own voice.

Reflection of Sound – Common Misconceptions An echo is one sound followed by a new second sound that comes from a different, distant source. –Reality: An echo is the effect of hearing a direct sound and its reflected sound separately. A person can measure a time delay between the production of the sound and the arrival of the reflection of that sound off a distant solid. Sound waves travel through all solids. –Reality: The amount of reflection of sound waves is dependent upon the dissimilarity of the two mediums through which the sound waves are traveling. A hard material, such as concrete, is dissimilar to air, which causes most of the sound waves to reflect. Softer materials, such as fiberglass, are more similar to air and cause more sound waves to be absorbed.

Reflection of Sound – Instructional Ideas Assign a different bat species to either each student or a small group of students and have each report to the class by making a poster. –Information about how the bat species is adapted to hunting by using echolocation and sonar should be included and illustrated.
