Standard Run-off Keep the two alternatives with the most first place votes and compare them head to head.

Sequential Run-off (Hare elimination) Repeatedly eliminate the choice or choices with the fewest first place votes until someone has a majority.

Coombs Method Eliminate the choice or choices with the most last place votes. Continue until someone has a majority.

Sequential Pairwise Run-off First, one pair of choices is considered and a vote taken The winner is then paired with another choice and a vote taken. The procedure of pairing and voting continues until a final winner is selected.

There are n alternatives. How many pairings are necessary to arrive at a winner? Try this for 3, then 4 and then 5, and look for a pattern to determine your answer.
