GREED 7 Deadly Sins New Life Church 23 rd Feb 2014

What are we greedy for?

Would abandon their entire family (25%) Would abandon their church (25%) Would become prostitutes for a week or more (23%) Would give up their American citizenships (16%) Would leave their spouses (16%) Would withhold testimony and let a murderer go free (10%) Would kill a stranger (7%) Would put their children up for adoption (3%) What are you willing to do for $10,000,000? Two-thirds of Americans polled would agree to at least one, some to several of the following:

We are just like one of these:

What’s wrong with being greedy anyway? The greedy bring ruin to their households, but the one who hates bribes will live. Prov The greedy stir up conflict, but those who trust in the Lord will prosper. Prov I was enraged by their sinful greed; I punished them, and hid my face in anger, yet they kept on in their wilful ways. Isaiah But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Eph 5.3

What else does the Bible say? So I say walk by the spirit and you will not gratify the pleasures of the flesh. Gal Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Gal 6:7-8

Implication - ‘Mind the Gap’ ‘Mind that there is a Gap’

What are we going to do about it? Hebrews 12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Count our blessings!

Find out who you are in God.

Do you know who you are in God? Are you looking at Jesus? Are you using food/possessions/fame etc to fill a gap which God should be filling? Are you taking time to notice and be grateful for what you’ve got?
