The Reformation in Germany What caused Martin Luther’s frustration with the Catholic Church? Selling of indulgences; corruption. What was Martin Luther’s belief about salvation? Explain. Salvation by faith alone. God granted salvation based on a person’s faith, not their actions. What did Martin Luther do to criticize the Catholic Church? Posted the 95 Theses; arguments that criticized the sale of indulgences and other Church abuses.

The Reformation in Germany What happened to Martin Luther as a result of his actions? What did he do? Tried for heresy at the Diet of Worms. Condemned as a heretic by the Edict of Worms and excommunicated from the Church when he refused to recant his beliefs. How were Martin Luther’s beliefs about God and salvation different than the one’s held by the Catholic Church? What lasting impact did he make to spread his beliefs? He believed in faith alone (justification by faith), while the Church argued that good works were needed for salvation. The church also sold indulgences as a way to buy forgiveness. He started the protestant reformation and led to the establishment of Lutheranism.

The Reformation in France When John Calvin fled France, where did he flee and what did he establish there? Fled to Geneva, Switzerland where he established a theocracy. What was Calvin’s main belief called? What does it mean? Predestination. God choses who will be saved (the elect) and those who won’t (the damned). Who were the French Huguenots and what was issued to grant their religious freedom? French people, including high-ranking nobles who converted to Calvinism. The Edict of Nantes granted their freedom.

The Reformation in France What did Calvin produce to establish and spread his doctrines? How did his work change Christianity? Institutes of the Christian Religion. It emphasized focusing on each I individuals deeds and his or her relationship with God. Which leader of France supported Protestants in the Thirty Years War? What was his religion, and what did he do through the Thirty Years War? Cardinal Richelieu who was a catholic. He supported Protestants and shifted the Thirty Years War from a religious conflict to a political conflict. How are John Calvin and Martin Luther similar? How did their ideas impact the Catholic Church? Both challenged the authority of the Catholic Church and focused Christians on the Bible and the importance of an individual’s personal relationship with God. Their ideas weakened the Catholic Church and created new denominations of Christianity.
