Promoting the Future of Family Medicine: the Pan American Family Medicine Clinics Marco Aurelio Janaudis Marcelo Levites Joshua Freemam Pablo Gonzalez Blasco Graziela Moreto Arnulfo Irigoyen

Objectives for the learner  Understand the context and stage of development of family medicine, and particularly academic family medicine in Latin American.  Become familiar with both APAMEFA and the Pan American Family Medicine Clinics  Identify ways of helping the development of academic family medicine in Latin America within or outside of STFM

 Although Family Medicine exists as a specialty in Latin American countries and other countries of the Americas, most do not have a true academic organization.  How long the discipline has existed varies from country to country (e.g., more than 35 years in Mexico; less than 10 years in Brazil), but family physicians are generally based in Public Health facilities, with little or no relationship to the medical schools. Latin America Background

 In some countries, governmental interest in implementing family health programs (e.g., Brazil) has led to funding for the establishment of residency programs in Family Health in a number of medical schools.  not popular with medical school graduates. Medical undergraduate students are not being attracted to Family Medicine.  they are clearly at a disadvantage compared to any other specialty and/or post-graduate program, because Family Medicine have a politic background and not academic profile. Latin America Background

Foundation  2005  São Paulo, Brazil  SOBRAMFA (Brazilian Society of Family Medicine) annual meeting

The main goals of APAMEFA are:  To develop and strengthen Family Medicine as an academic discipline in the Americas.  To create an academic space for the interchange of family physicians, residents, students, and health professionals who demonstrate an interest in and aptitude for the discipline.

The main goals of APAMEFA are:  To identify and develop leadership that can collaborate and create progress in family medicine as an academic discipline in their respective countries.  To promote the diffusion of the knowledge base of family medicine.  To interact with other international organizations to promote world health.

How can we make the mission and vision of APAMEFA come true?

Colaboración Internacional recién Iniciada Asociación Panamericana Académica de Medicina Familiar. “Convocando Liderazgos para la Medicina Familiar: Una Reflexión Vital” Desarrollar y Fortalecer la Medicina de Familia como Disciplina Académica en el continente Americano.

WHAT IS INNOVATIVE ?  The innovative character of this journal is that, in addition to facilitating the exchange of academic experiences throughout the all countries of the Americas, the primary authors are young doctors and residents in training.

 They are able to share their own experiences in learning and in practice in an international forum.  Understand Family Medicine with a own body of knowledge.  While adhering to scientific standards, most of the papers published by family medicine residents are written in an informal style that facilitates communication with their peers. WHAT IS INNOVATIVE ?

 They usually start with cases from their clinical practice which raise clinical inquiries, from which the medical evidence is introduced along with the practical experience into the final discussion.  These papers are thus evidence-based and enriched with the daily practice of family medicine practice of family medicine residents in their learning residents in their learning environments. environments. Divided no More!!! Every job becomes philosophy, and is transformed into art and into poetry and creation, as long as those who do it put on their work their entire lives and they are not divided in two parts: one for the ideal and the other for the daily routine. They are wise people that turn into the very same mission the daily task and the ideal, being at once duty and liberty, routine and ongoing renovate inspiration.  Eugenio D´Ors. “Leaning and heroism”.
