SEMINAR ON TURBO DIRECT INJECTION ENGINES BY- NAKUL SINGH 7AE-033

DIESEL ENGINES In 1893, a German engineer named Rudolf Diesel perfected the compression-ignition engine that bears his name The diesel engine uses heat created by compression to ignite the fuel, so it requires no spark ignition system. A lot of changes have been bought about in diesel engines since first engine was invented.

TDI (TURBO CHARGED DIRECT INJECTION) Developed and produced by volkswagon group TDI or Turbocharged Direct Injection is a design of turbo diesel engines, which feature turbocharging and cylinder-direct fuel injection Turbocharged direct injection is innovative engine design that delivers a combination of 1.Performance. 2.Fuel economy . 3. Low emission

CONSTRUCTION Mass air flow sensor Turbocharger Intercooler Direct fuel injector Engine control unit

MASS AIR FLOW SENSORS Converts the amount of air entering into the engine into voltage signals Located directly in between air cleaner and throttle body ECM needs to know the amount of intake air volume Necessary to determine how much fuel to be injected inside cylinder

TURBOCHARGER Centrifugal compressor powered by high speed turbines, driven by engine exhaust Improves volumetric efficiency of the engines. The function of turbocharger is to increase the amount of air entering the engine. The power and the torque increases tremendously compared to an engine without a turbocharger

SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM

INTERCOOLERS Mechanical device used to cool fluid including liquid and gases Increase efficiency of the induction system by reducing air induction heat Lowering of intake charge temperature eliminates the danger of predetonation

ENGINE CONTROL UNIT (ECU) Electric control unit that controls the series of actuators of on an internal combustion engine Does this by reading values from a multitude sensors in the engine bay Functions Control of Air/Fuel ratio Control of idle speed Control of variable valve timing

WORKING OF TDI TDI engine uses a computer controlled injection system. Fuel is directly sprayed into the combustion chamber at very high pressure This helps in promoting complete combustion  Fuel injector sprays atomised fuel directly into the main combustion chamber of each cylinder.

IMPROVEMENTS OVER PREVIOUS DIESEL ENGINES More power Less smoke Better fuel consumption Cold start Turbo lag Lower compression ratio

ADVANTAGES Eco conscious Increased efficiency Max output with minimum fuel consumption High torque

DISADVANTAGES Low rpm High cost Space requirement
