Presentation transcript:

MISSION STATEMENT Distinguished Young Women is a national scholarship program that inspires high school girls to develop their full, individual potential through a fun, transformative experience that culminates in a celebratory showcase of their accomplishments. By encouraging continued education and providing college scholarships By developing self-confidence and the abilities to interview effectively, to speak in public, to perform on stage and to build interpersonal relationships By encouraging and showcasing excellence in academic achievement, physical fitness, on-stage performance skills, and the ability to think and communicate clearly By creating opportunities to beneficially inspire the lives of others

THE PROGRAM Distinguished Young Women is a unique program that combines the chance to win college scholarships with a program that offers Life Skills training to prepare young women for the world after high school. Each year we make over $1.1 billion dollars in scholarships available and it costs nothing to enter! The program takes place in all 50 states and Washington D.C., with some states having local programs as well. Young women participate in their junior year of high school here in Georgia. We currently have nine local programs and all other communities are served by our Georgia At-Large program. For our 2016 program year, we had 85 participants across the state, and 19 young women represented their communities at the state program in Marietta last July.

FAST FACTS 2015 marked the 58th annual national program Number of Volunteers: Approximately 10,000 Number of participants (local, state and national): Almost 3,400 Number of contestants since 1958 (beginning of program): Over 740,000 Number of universities and colleges that offer college-granted scholarships: Almost 100 Cash scholarships provided since 1958 (beginning of program): $104 million College scholarships opportunities made available in 2015: More than $1.1 billion

JUDGING CRITERIA Each Distinguished Young Women program (at-large, local, state and national) evaluates participants in the following categories: Scholastics 25% Interview 25% Talent 20% Fitness 15% Self-Expression 15%

LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM Distinguished Young Women provides a series of workshops and online resources that allow our participants to learn skills like interviewing, public speaking, self-confidence building and much more. These skills not only prepare everyone for our program, but also for the world after high school and college.

BE YOUR BEST SELF PROGRAM The Be Your Best Self program allows Distinguished Young Women participants to reach out and encourage young people nationwide to make a commitment to being their best selves in areas such as: academics, physical fitness, morality, character, and social and civic participation. Embracing the BYBS message empowers young people with valuable tools to face the challenges of negative peer pressure. Drawing on their own personal experiences, Distinguished Young Women program participants deliver helpful messages emphasizing the importance of setting goals and striving to reach them. 5 Elements of the Be Your Best Self Program Be Healthy – Be physically fit and drug free. Be Involved – Serve your community. Be Studious – Stay in school. Be Ambitious – Set and achieve goals. Be Responsible – Live by moral and ethical principles.
