Habakkuk (Habaq – embrace. One who embraces.) Habakkuk the Prophet (1:1; 3:1). Habakkuk was associated with the temple worship as the book is written ‘To the Chirf Musican. With my stringed instruments.’ (3:19) Written as Babylon rose in power over the Assyrians. Probably written during the reign of King Jehoiakim (609 –597 BC). 2 Kings 23:34 – 24:5; Jeremiah 22:17. Most likely date would therefore be just before the Babylonians invaded Judah in 605 BC. Date of Habakkuk c. 607 BC Theme: The just shall live by faith (2:4)

Jews being taken as prisoners to Babylon Habbakuk prophesied about 607 BC The Babylonians invaded Judah during the first year of the reign of Nebucchadnezzar (605BC). 10,000 Jews were taken into captivity.

Chapter 3 – Habakkuk’s prayer and praise Habakkuk prayer (3:1-3) In wrath remember mercy (3:2) His glory (3:4) His wrath (3:5-15) Habakkuk trusts in the Lord (3:16-19) Habakkuk trembles (3:16). Judah will be invaded and taken into captivity by the Babylonians yet Habakkuk sees the eternal plan and purpose of God. Habakkuk will rejoice even in sorrow (3:17-18) The Lord is His strength (3:19)
