Welcome to Queensmount Senior Public School

Just the facts…. Only grades 7 and 8 Approximately 400 students next year 7 grade seven classes and 8 grade eight classes We start classes at 8:20 a.m. We finish classes at 2:40 p.m. Grade 7 students coming from Southridge, WT Townsend, Forest Hill, JF Carmichael and Williamsburg, Sandhills, Crestview

It’s not so scary…these things are the same as elementary school You will belong to one class (7-1, 7-2, etc) We have two nutrition breaks and you still get to go outside for recess (we go outside first, then eat) You still stay at school for nutrition breaks unless you are going home for lunch with permission (no off-campus visits to neighbourhood restaurants) We have pizza and cookies for sale on Fridays We have extra curricular activities and clubs The school rules are the same The teachers still care about you You may have a planner (or your phone, or tablet, or notebook)

Some things that are different about senior school…. You have your own locker to keep your stuff in You will switch teachers for each subject Your “Core” teacher teaches English, History, Geography, Drama and a bit of DPA There are some opportunities to stay inside at recess time (homework club, library, open classrooms) For half the year you have art and then for half the year you have music (same for history and geography)

….and more You will learn to play a musical instrument in second term There are school sports teams that compete against other senior school teams Wrestling is part of the Physical Education curriculum There is a design and technology component to the science curriculum – We call it Maker Spaces You go to the gym on Fridays to buy your own pizza and/or cookies Some Fridays are “Funtastic”!

There is a bit more responsibility… Because it is a 5-day schedule and you have different teachers, you need to know what day it is and what subject to go to first If you are late, you will end up having detentions—it is your responsibility to get here on time (parents can call and excuse the late) You have to keep your locker tidy and your lock combination A SECRET You can bring a phone, tablet etc. to school as long as you use it responsibly and your parents agree

What does a day look like? 5 day cycle 1 hour periods with four 30-minute classes in five days No homeroom time but you will have an assigned homeroom teacher 2 hours of core every day 1 hour of math every day 2 ½ hours of French, Science, Phys. Ed., Arts every 5-day cycle
