Integrating Resources An Introduction for IOCC May 16, 2002 Mechael D. Charbonneau

Definition Integrating resource: A continuing resource that is added to or changed by means of updates that do not remain discrete and are integrated into the whole. Examples include items that are loose-leaf for updating and Web sites. -AACR2 pending revision

Examples of integrating resources:  Updating loose-leaf  Databases (including directories, A&I services, etc.)  Electronic discussion groups (e.g., SERIALST)  Online public access catalogs (e.g., OCLC, RLIN)  Online services (e.g., America online)

AACR2 Revisions: Chapter 12 will be renamed from “Serials” to “Continuing Resources” and has been broadened to include all continuing resources, both serials and integrating resources. Unlike serials, title changes to integrating resources will not require a new record. The same record is used, but the existing title is replaced with the new title. The earlier title is given in a note on the record.

Format “i” New bibliographic format created to identify integrating resources through MARC coding. Leader/07 (Bibliographic Level) will be coded with value “i”

MARC Variable Fields: Some notes will be tagged in variable fields formerly used for serials: for earlier titles for frequency of updates for dates of publication when not from first/last iteration for issuing body information These will be new for most monographic catalogers.

MARC Leader and 008 New codes for integrating resources published but not yet implemented by the utilities: Bibliographic level code “i” New serials 008 codes Both OCLC and RLIN do not plan to fully implement/support the new MARC 21 format changes until mid-2003.

What do we do during the interim?  Continue to code integrating resources that are textual (including textual databases and Web sites) as monographs  Integrating resources that are primarily non-textual will continue to be coded as computer file (e.g., online system or service) or maps (e.g., a cartographic updating Web site)  Possibility of adding serial 006 field to the above formats during the interim

Implementation Schedule  AACR2 Amendments 2002 – behind schedule due out August/September  LCRIs to be published September/October  LC to implement October/November?

What will this mean for us locally?  Catalogers will need to be trained in the new format  A new MARC format “i” will need to be defined in IUCAT  What will integrated resources be called in a WebCat search?  Will integrated resources be a separate search or combined with other indexes in the WebCat?
