DO NOT TOUCH OR PLAY THE INSTRUMENTS

Guitar, Orchestra, Chorus, Band EXT 164

 Play simple songs on an instrument/sing age appropriate music designated by teacher  Read music notation  Understand music history  Use music vocabulary  Listen to and critique a variety of music  Compose a simple song  Identify careers in music  Perform in concerts/events

 ½” Black binder with plastic sleeves (10-20)  Pencil  Composition notebook or loose leaf paper  Staff book or manuscript paper (  Individual instrument supplies (strings, reeds)  Guitar pick  Black “Music MLK-8” Polo ( about $15, to be ordered at a later date)  Concert attire: black shirt, black shoes, and black pants.

 Be on time (2 minute leeway)  Focus on assignment  Complete home learning (10% of grade)  Poor behavior (talking, gum chewing, tardiness will not be tolerated)  Discipline: follow school wide discipline procedures  Students will lose instrument privileges if he/she does not demonstrate responsible behaviors and will be given an alternate assignment

 All students will be required to pay the music fee ($4 to $6).  This is a fee to cover costs associated with the use of musical equipment.  Will be collected at a later date- do not send your child to school with $$ until further notice.

 Performances are mandatory- 2 week notice must be given if a child is going to miss a performance. (Absence due to illness will require a note from parents.)  Spring Concert and Fine Arts Night  Additional performances for Chorus will be scheduled and are mandatory (Holiday Show, Main Street December Entertainment, Disney, various teacher celebration performances)

 Home Learning 10%  Performances 45%  Class work 45% (lowest grade is dropped)  Extra credit will count towards Home Learning (research and write a 2 paragraph essay about a musician or musical instrument)

 Do your own research  DO NOT PLAGARISE other’s work or it will be an automatic “F”  Write everything in your own words ( I prefer “kid” language that shows student comprehension to college textbook language)  Use citations and a bibliography  This applies to ALL assignments that include writing about musicians or music history!  NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 The child is responsible for the assigned instrument  Any damage caused by irresponsible behavior will result in the replacement or repair of the instrument paid for by the parents  Sign Instrument Responsibility form  Students are encouraged to purchase their own instrument!

 The PTSA supports the music program greatly. Please join the PTSA to keep our arts programs at MLK-8 going strong.  Thank you for your donations!

 Chorus and selected instrumentalists will be selected to perform for this event.  Dress rehearsal is Sept. 28 th  Performance is Oct. 6 th
