Pacific War Before and after Pearl Harbor Japan was expanding it’s empire. They conquered much of mainland Asia and continued south and east across the Pacific.

April 18, 1942: Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle led 16 bombers in an air raid of Tokyo city. Doolittle’s Raid helped to lift America’s spirits while dampening the spirts of Japan.

May 1942: The Battle of the Coral Sea lasted for 5 days. The American and Australian stopped Japan’s advance towards Australia.

June 1942: The Battle of Midway was a turning point in the Pacific War. The allies decimated the Japanese fleet at Midway and began to move closer to Japan after winning the battle.

August 1942: The invasion of Guadalcanal was the first Allied offensive in the Pacific. The battle lasted six months and was Japan’s first defeat on land.
