LO: Be able to explain the impact of WW2 on Germany Starter: What can you learn from this image about one of the impacts of WW2 on Germany?

World War II in 7 bullets… – Germany and Russia carve up Poland. No real fighting in the West – Germany defeats France in 6 weeks. Battle of Britain – for control of British skies – won by RAF – Germany invades Russia and pushes Russian army back to Moscow. Dec ‘41 – Japan attacks USA; USA declares war on Japan and Germany – Stalemate. Germany navy too weak to attack UK. British & US army too weak to land in France – tide turns in Russia – German army retreats – Allies land in France and open up Western Front. Germany now fighting on 2 fronts – German armies defeated. Germany surrenders and senior Nazis commit suicide. Aug – Atomic bombs dropped on Japan, ending the Pacific War.

Enthusiasm for war? Hitler had fulfilled his promises to…  … tear up the Treaty of Versailles…  … rebuild Germany’s armed forces…  … unite Germany and Austria…  … and extend German territory into eastern Europe.  However in doing so, he started WW2. Most Germans had no enthusiasm for war – they remembered the horrors of WWI in which 2.5m Germans died.  But in war, as in peace time, the Nazis used all available methods to make the German people support the regime.

Timeline of impact of war on Germany  The left-hand column charts the fortunes of the German army during WW2  Read pages and complete the right hand column by explaining how the German people were affected at these times  Ext. task: Answer the question at the bottom of the sheet in your exercises book.
