Specified Content: Wagner Act, Fair Labor Standards Act, Social Security Act, SEC State Standards: Strand 1 Concept 8 PO 1 a, b, c, d

Activity On a separate sheet of paper, answer the following questions: 1.What do you know about unions? Give an example of a union working today. 2.What do you know about the Social Security system? 3.Do you know anything about the Securities Exchange Commission? If so, write what you know.

Social Security The Wagner Act, or National Labor Relations Act, established the legal right of workers to join labor unions for collective bargaining.

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) established the 40 hour work week, a national minimum wage, and prohibited the employment of minors in “oppressive child labor.”

The Social Security Act established a tax to provide money for retirees and the jobless. It was the first federal assistance provided for the elderly in the U.S.

The Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) was created to protect the stock market by establishing a group to oversee the exchanges and prevent abuses like the ones that led to Black Tuesday.
