TECHNOLOGY What is it and how does it affective your life?
Technology is the products and processes designed to serve our needs
The words science and technology can and often are used interchangeably. But the goal of science is the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake while the goal of technology is to create products that solve problems and improve human life. Simply put, technology is the practical application of science.wordsgoal
TECHNOLOGY IS A PART OF SCIENCE BUT HOW IS IT DIFFERENT? Technology Technology is doing The search for and theorizing about new processes. Activities always value-laden Analysis and synthesis of design Key Technological Processes Science Science is knowing The search for and theorizing about cause Making virtually value-free statements Analysis, generalization and creation of theories Corresponding Scientific Processes
Focuses on understanding natural phenomena Discovery (controlled by experimentation) Drawing correct conclusions based on good theories and accurate data Experimental and logical skills needed focuses on understanding the made environment Design, invention, production Taking good decisions based on incomplete data and approximate models Design, construction, testing, planning, quality assurance, problem solving, decision making, interpersonal and communication skills ScienceTechnology
How has technology changed over the years?
How has technology changed?
WHAT IS ENGINEERING AND HOW DOES IT RELATE TO TECHNOLOGY? Engineering is the process of creating technology. Professional engineers, scientists, inventors, business owners, artists and even students have engineered new technologies. How you ask???? Anyone can follow the engineering design process to solve a problem or address a need.
WHAT IS THE ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS?
Let’s look at each step of the Engineering Design process. ASK Identify the problem or need. Research the need or problem. Examine the current state of the issue. An example: Air pollution is a big problem. How can we cut down on this? Design an automobile that uses a non polluting energy source.
Imagine Develop possible solutions. Brainstorm possible solutions. ( A group of people share ideas quickly to promote additional ideas). Sometimes one product may spark an idea for another product. Use math and science. Select the best possible solution. Determine which solution best meets the original needs.
Design The prototype may be a physical model or a computer model. This allows engineers to see if their design works.
Create Make a prototype. Test and evaluate the solution. Do the prototype do the job it was designed to do? Engineers make sure that the cost of designing and producing the new product is worth its benefit. This is called cost benefit analysis. Is it safe, reliable and durable?
Improve Modify and retest the solution if necessary. If it did not work well engineers would modify their prototype or try a new solution.
Communicate Communicate your results to other engineers and customers of the product.
Notes SPI 0807.T.E.1 (Prototype Testing) SPI 0807.T/E.2 (Eng. Des. Process) Step 1: Identify a need Why did Tony Stark build the "Iron Man" suit? Step 2: Develop Possible Solutions What are some other options he could have built instead? Step 2a: Pick the best design Do you think the "Iron Man" suit was the best design option? Step 3: Make a prototype Where and how did Tony build his prototype(s) Step 4: Test the prototype Where and how did Tony test his prototype(s) Step 5: Modify and re-test the prototype How did Tony modify his prototype to make it work better? The Iron Man Movies and the Engineering Design Process Billionaire genius and weapons designerTony Stark is captured by terrorists, and they want him to build a super-weapon. Instead he builds an armored exoskeleton to fight them.

Address these questions about this prototype Needs being addressed? What are some prototype design considerations? What is the mark version? How would you test and re-test this prototype? What might be some unintended consequences? Adaptive or assistive Bioengineering? (Explain)

Benefits and Consequences Unintended consequences of new technology: Uses or results that engineers do not purposely include in the design of products. Unintended consequences can be beneficial. An example would be roadside restaurants, gas stations etc., that provide jobs and conveniences for travelers. Unintended consequences can be harmful. An example is air pollution caused by the burning of gasoline that powers our modes of transportation.
BENEFICIAL CONSEQUENCES Roadside businessesSmall businesses
HARMFUL CONSEQUENCES Shrinking polar ice caps! Acid Rain from pollution.
INTENDED BENEFITS Intended benefits are the positive purpose for which a technology is designed to be used. An example is the automobile that provides a convenient way to travel. Another example is the internet which allows access to information at our fingertips.
INTENDED BENEFITS High speed travelCommunication
Label page in your journal benefits and consequences of technology. With the person sitting to your left, discuss the benefits and consequences of the following technology: Smart Phone X-Ray Electricity Medications Wind Generators Write down what you decide are the benefits and consequences of each.
BIOENGINEERING What does that mean?
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF BIOENGINEERING Assistive Engineering that results in a product or process that helps living organisms but does not change them permanently. Adaptive Engineering that results in a product or process that changes living organisms.
ADAPTIVE OR ASSISTIVE???? On page in your journal make 2 columns labeled Adaptive and Assistive Write the name of the item you see underneath the type of bioengineering you think it is. Remember: Assist = Help Adapt = Change
HEARING AID
CRUTCHES
HIP REPLACEMENT
KNEE BRACE
GENETICALLY ALTERED CORN THAT RESISTS PESTS
ARM CAST
ANGIOPLASTY
CROP PESTICIDE
CONTACT LENSES
ARTIFICIAL LIMBS
COCHLEAR IMPLANTS
GLASSES
Choose one adaptive bioengineering technology and one assistive bioengineering technology to draw. Draw and color each one in the appropriate column in your journal Label the item and write one sentence on how each piece of technology can help organisms in their daily lives.
