Fun Facts!!! Grocery stores are not allowed to be open on Sundays, but gas stations and kiosks can (and they sell groceries). Because food prices are so high in Norway, many Norwegians drive across the border to Sweden to shop. These purchases amount to over 2 billion USD every year. Even though Norway is one of the top oil producers in the world, gas is more expensive in Norway than almost anywhere. Norwegians eat brown cheese (brunost) Most Norwegians take a 4 week holiday during the summer. This means that the country slows down a lot and if you were a tourist and you aren´t aware of this, you would wonder where everyone would be and why nothing would be open. Return to links page

Norwegians do not typically smile or start talking to a stranger on the bus. It is not considered rude to behave as such. The official name of Norway is 'Kingdom of Norway'. Norway is the sixth largest country of Europe, in terms of land mass. However, in terms of population, it ranks only 28th. The coastline of Norway, including fjords and bays, stretches over 20,000 kilometers. The highest mountain in Norway is Galdhopiggen (2,469 m). The largest lake in the country is Mjosa. Return to links page Leif Erikson, a Norwegian Viking, discovered North America in the late 900’s.

It is believed that the name Norway means “Path to the North”. The Jostedalsbreen, in Norway, is the largest glacier in Northern Europe. Hundreds of thousands of Norwegians migrated to USA in the 19th century. As per Encyclopedia Britannica, Norwegians read more than any other population in the world. Norway was rated the most peaceful country in the world, in a survey conducted by Global Peace Index in Norway is counted amongst the wealthiest countries of the world. Return to links page

Oslo is the capital of Norway. Vetisfossen is Norway’s highest waterfall. Sognefjorden is Norway’s largest Fjord. Norway is nicknamed “The Land of the Midnight Sun” 7. 99% of all electricity generated in Norway is hydropower. Norway rejected membership to the European Union in 1972 and again in Return to links page

The country has a total land area of almost 150,000 square miles, and is bordered to the east by Sweden, to the north by Finland and Russia, to the south by Denmark (across the Skagerrak Strait), and to the west by the North Atlantic Ocean. The life expectancy of Norway is approximately 79 years old. Norway is a fjord country as you will have notices on the map of Norway. There are great fjords to visit, like the Sogna fjorden, which is the biggest fjord in Norway with its 180km long finger. The most spectacular fjord in Norway is said to be the Geiranger fjord. All of the surviving stave churches, (medieval wooden churches with a post and beam construction related to timber framing,) except one, are found in Norway. return to links page
