Conflicts & Events Cold War: Notebook page 7

Bell ringer – page 7 According to what you know right now, who do YOU think is responsible for the Cold War? Take these things into consideration when answering the question:  State of the world after WWII (destruction, lives lost, winners/losers, atomic weapons, etc.)  Policies by the two Superpowers (Containment, Communism, Marshall Plan, Warsaw Pact, NATO, etc.)  Media (Speeches, movies, radio, etc.)  Is there any other info you would need to know to make a better decision?

Essential Question What were the major events of the Cold War?

Setting the Scene U.S. committed to containment of communism Each superpower is armed with nuclear weapons (arms race) Tensions are high World is divided East vs. West – few major countries have not picked a side (non-aligned)

Korean War (?) Korea divided North/South  North = communists  South = democratic North invades South with Soviet and Chinese support US/UN supports South – China sends 300,000 troops War ends (kinda) – same borders exist today

Hungarian Revolution Stalin dies in 1953  New leader: Nikita Khrushchev Hungary – Satellite of Soviet Union New gov’t – withdraw from the Warsaw Pact Khrushchev sends in troops to crush uprising – control restored

Berlin Wall Berlin divided East vs. West  Soviet control in east, free in west 2.6 million flee into West Berlin – escape communism Soviet Union builds The Wall  15 feet high, 100 miles long  Checkpoints, guard towers, minefields  New symbol of Cold War

Bay of Pigs (‘61) and Cuban Missile Crisis (‘62) Fidel Castro overthrows gov’t in Cuba, becomes communist CIA tries to invade Cuba to overthrow Castro – epic fail – Bay of Pigs Invasion Castro seeks Soviet help (both communist-style gov’t) Soviets place nuclear missiles in Cuba Two week standoff – Soviets back down

Czechoslovakia Uprising aka “Prague Spring” Czech leader Alexander Dubcek elected  Relaxed censorship – freedoms of speech and press Soviets alarmed – send in troops and tanks Hard-line communist control restored

Vietnam War 1965 – ’73 North Vietnam (Viet Cong) – Communist supported by China/Soviets South Vietnam – Support by U.S. Part of containment policy U.S. pulls out in ‘73 – South falls shortly after Refugees still arrive in U.S. today

BTW… In your opinion, what is the most important Cold War event we have studied so far? Be sure to explain and give evidence from the notes.
