“The temples and monasteries in the town of Valuiky”

History of Valuiky The town of Valuiky was founded in 1593 as a fortress on Muravskiy way. In those times it was the south border of Russian state. In those times, also, the monastery’s underground caves were founded there. Few years later several churches and temples were built there, among them was Uspensky Temple.

The temple of Ignatiy Bogonosets It is still unknown, when the temple of Ignaty Bogonosets was founded. This temple puts together one whole with ground constructions of Valuisky Uspensky Nicolaevsky men’s monastery. The temple is situated at the distance of 1 km from the basic territory of the monastery, on the Medovaya mountain, behind the Oscol river.

Since 1897 monks began to increase the caves and to1910 they cleared them away. In 1926 the monastery was closed, the caves were robbed and monks were punished. And only in 2007 the ground temple of Ignaty Bogonosets was rebuilt on the Lysaya mountain.

Svyato – Nicolaevsky cathedral Another amazing building in our town is the Svyato- Nicolaevsky cathedral. During Great Patriotic war it was a store for weapons. Then The government gave the bell and ladder to fire service. After the war the cathedral was used with many aims but not for church services.

Nowadays, the cathedral is included into the list of monuments of architecture, which are protected by state.
