Prepare to take notes: Main Idea: Detail: Doodle: Doodle Divide your paper like the image you see and fill in the information for each box.

Elements of Art Line Path of a moving point Has weight Has direction Examples: vertical, horizontal, diagonal, curved, dashed, & much more

Elements of Art Shape Enclosed area Two-dimensional Organic or Geometric Organic: from nature Geometric: man made, can be measured

Elements of Art Form 3-D shape Has height, weight, depth

Elements of Art Space Can be created by overlapping Defined by background, middle ground, foreground

Elements of Art Space Can be Positive Can be Negative Space object occupies “Where it is” Can be Negative Space surrounding object “Where it isn’t”

Elements of Art Color Has hue Has Intensity Another word for color Brightness The purity of the color

Elements of Art Texture Real Implied How something feels -OR- Implied Looks like it feels Examples: rough, smooth, sandy, fuzzy, slick

Elements of Art Value Light and dark relationships

Principles of Design Contrast Opposites Examples: Complementary colors Dark versus light

Principles of Design Balance Arrangement of a composition Three types: Symmetrical Asymmetrical Radial

Principles of Design Symmetrical Balance Formal balance Composition identical on both sides Dividing line can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal

Principles of Design Asymmetrical Balance Stability without begin formal Not alike on both sides

Principles of Design Radial Balance Comes from the center Radiates from the middle

Principles of Design Gradation Gradual change of any element; shape, size, color, value… Orderly, predictable, and expected

Principles of Design Movement Look of action Causes eye to sweep across the work How the work flows

Principles of Design Rhythm Pattern caused by a visual “beat” Alternating patterns Organized repetition

Principles of Design Proportion Size relationship to the whole or to each other Scale of objects

Principles of Design Unity/Harmony Similarity in elements Subtle changes Uniform appearance Looks as if the elements belong together Feeling of oneness Works together

Principles of Design Variety Many different elements and principles used all at once Intricate Complicated

Principles of Design Emphasis Focal point Center of interest Captures your attention Where your eyes move to or see first Everything in the picture points to this area

Line Shape Form Space Color Texture Value Elements of Art Principles of Design Line Shape Form Space Color Texture Value Contrast Balance Movement Gradation Rhythm Proportion Variety Harmony Emphasis

Final Project Choose an object to draw for your palette design. Brainstorm ideas You will use your object to visually explain each of the Elements and Principles. One for each term- except color and texture Our painted backgrounds with plastic wrap will cover those principles Label each section with the Element or Principle in your sketchbook as you design them

Things to consider: Your object doesn’t have to be realistic for each Element or Principle. Use a variety of view points Think about your backgrounds and how they need to relate to that Element or Principle. You may draw your object multiple times in one section to demonstrate an E or P. You may draw your object close up, as long as it is still recognizable. Feel free to “think outside the box” as long as you are fulfilling the requirements given!!!
