Presentation transcript:

William Jury Vice Provost for Academic Personnel Campus Immigration Services Policy

Changes in Campus Immigration Services Policy All new non-resident tenure-track hires will have legal expenses made part of initial complement All pending cases have been included in new policy Faculty should apply for special handling, which has rapid processing

Changes in Campus Immigration Services Policy Non-resident non tenure-track hires will not have legal expenses paid by campus Non tenure-track faculty must apply for permanent residency under the category of exceptional scholar or researcher The application process takes up to two years

Changes in Campus Immigration Services Policy Temporary residence visas for campus visitors such as researchers are generally of two types: J-1 and H1-B UCR will change its policy on who may apply for these in June

Changes in Campus Immigration Services Policy J-1 Exchange Visitor – 3 year maximum (approved in any increments). – Must provide evidence of minimum financial support. – Must have health insurance coverage – Processing time is 2-3 months – Cannot subsequently apply for H1-B

Changes in Campus Immigration Services Policy H-1B Exchange Visitor – 6 year maximum – Minimum salary ("prevailing wage") required, except for union represented (SRAs and lecturers). – Employment is restricted to the job duties as stated in the original application. – Longer processing time and much more work for campus

Changes in Campus Immigration Services Policy Effective in June, UCR will no longer allow postdoctoral researchers to apply for H-1b status No other UC campus allows this We are vulnerable to audit We may have liability if funding runs out
