UNDERSTANDING MOTIVATION Notetaking and Study Skills Unit 1

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?  Movies? Movies?  Music? Music?  Quotes? Quotes?  Hobbies or interests?  Friends?  A big dream?  Praise?  Rewards?

INSTRINSIC MOTIVATION  When people do something for the joy of doing it, or because they think it is right.  “I LOVE baseball, I play every chance I get!”  “When I help people and see them succeed, it’s the best feeling in the world!”  “Painting is my life.”  “I don’t need a social life, or a girlfriend… that is all incidental. It gets in the way of code time.”

EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION  When people do something for an external reward or tangible result.  Studying because you want to get a good grade  Cleaning your room to avoid being reprimanded by your parents  Participating in a sport in order to win awards  Competing in a contest in order to win a scholarship

Which is most effective?  INTRINSIC OR EXTRINSIC?  Generally speaking, intrinsic motivation lasts longer and means more. If it comes from within you … isn’t bought, isn’t forced … it is always there for you to tap into.  Both can be very effective though!  When does extrinsic motivation work best?  External rewards can induce interest and participation in something the individual had no initial interest in.  Extrinsic rewards can be used to motivate people to acquire new skills or knowledge. Once these initial skills have been acquired, people may then become more intrinsically motivated to pursue the activity.  Praise can help increase internal motivation.

6 P’s of Motivation for Academic and Professional Success  PRAISE – Students who are motivated by recognition or belonging will be motivated by sincere words of praise.  POWER – students who want control over their environment or choices  PROJECTS – some students are motivated to work on projects that bring together various topics or disciplines. (real life vs text book)  PEOPLE – Students who are people-oriented are especially drawn to activities that allow them to work with people and build relationships.  PRIZES – students who are drawn to status, recognition, and power will find prizes motivating.  PRESTIGE – Feeling important and needed is motivating for students who are drawn to that.
