Desert Region The desert region has an extreme climate. This region is hot and dry. People who live in this region get water from the Colorado River. The Mojave Desert is very high and the largest desert. Unlike the Mojave , Death Valley is below sea level.

Mountain region The mountain region is another extreme place. Some mountains in California include Mount Whitney and Sierra Nevada’s. Yosemite Valley, part of the Yosemite National Park, has Ribbon Falls. Unlike the coast ranges, there are extremely high peaks in the mountain region.

Coastal Region The coastal region has a nice climate, causing many people to move there. The coastal region stretches more than 800 miles along the Pacific Ocean. There are many cliffs in the coastal region. Most of California’s coast is rocky, but there are two natural harbors where ships can dock safely.

Central Valley Region The central valley region is the most productive farmland. This region is located between the Coast ranges and Sierra Nevada. A delta is in the central valley. The San Joaquin River is located in the central valley region. The mountains water, or a rain shadow, causes the central valley to have fertile soil.
